Atlanter Curated by SXSW
Atlanter is a norwegian rock band inspired by desert blues bands, by German krautrock and by old delta blues. All this is done with a Norwegian twist and point of view, and is perhaps best described as Norwegian viddeblues. Atlanter has an open-minded approach to playing music. The songs change from one concert to another, has made them a live-favorite in Norway.
Their debut album ‘Vidde’ from 2013 was nominated for a Norwegian Grammy (Spellemann) in the Indie category and was voted as one of the best albums in Norway in 2013 by most of the important news media. #3 NRK P3 (hippest radiostation), #4 in VG (norways biggest newspaper), #6 in Dagbladet (second biggest newspaper).

Caught A Ghost Curated by SXSW
Caught a Ghost produces a sound and aesthetic that separates them from the rest of their neo-soul contemporaries. Of course there are threads of classic influence that are apparent, but, for example, the hypnotic synth line on “Time Go” as well as the use of dubstep wobble bass with a full Motown horn section on “Sleeping at Night,” quickly sets the band apart from others that have tried to directly revive the Motown sound.
Every song feels on some level like a great remix. “I love the aesthetic of taking something old and repurposing it.” Nolan says. “But another difference with my music is that I don’t tend to use samples- I’m just sampling my musical memory. It’s a very imprecise process really, like a Jackson Pollock painting. I’m just splashing sounds around. I’m an imperfectionist.”

Pure Bathing Culture Curated by Gorilla vs Bear
It’s a rare and beautiful thing when a band emerges fully formed, but it makes perfect sense in the case of guitarist Daniel Hindman and keyboardist Sarah Versprille’s Pure Bathing Culture. Having backed folk rock revisionist Andy Cabic in Vetiver, the New Yorkers partnered up and moved West in 2011, settling in Portland, Oregon. Building off their past experiences as musical collaborators, in a short time the duo
have created a sound that is undeniably their own: soaring synths, chiming keyboards, and shimmering electric guitars move in lockstep with bouncing drum machines. Sarah’s crystalline voice floats on top of it all with divine purpose. It’s a sound that looks back momentarily for inspiration — Talk Talk, Prefab Sprout, Cocteau Twins — but then fixes its gaze firmly on the present.
Further developing the sound of their acclaimed four song, self-titled 2012 EP, at the start of 2013 they set out to record Moon Tides, their first full length album. Again, they chose to work with producer Richard Swift at his National Freedom studio in rural Cottage Grove, Oregon. Throughout 2012 Swift had called on the duo to help him with other studio projects (Versprille sings on Foxygen’s latest LP and Hindman adds his sprawling guitar work to Damien Jurado’s excellent Marqopa) which only helped to cement the threesome’s musical partnership. For Moon Tides they continued where the previous EP left off, bolstered by Swift’s belief in the duo’s artistic vision and their unique sound, “From very early on, Richard was the person telling us that what we were hearing and wanting to do musically (which at times could feel a little strange or embarrassing to us) was ok and valid and that we should pursue it.”
Like the earlier sessions for the EP, they worked quickly in the studio and improvised parts around the basic song structures that they’d carefully composed up in Portland. Dan explains, “Pretty much all tracks (vocals and instruments) are all first or very early takes. Richard is kind of a stickler about this and I actually don’t go in with a clean, pristine idea of what I’m going to play on guitar or any other instrument for that matter, so there’s actually a lot of improvisation as far as performances in the studio go.” The results, like the earlier EP, are astounding: the arrangements feel fresh and imaginative, the melodies are unforgettable and the finished songs, most importantly, feel intensely human and deeply spiritual.
It’s this compassion and warmth in Pure Bathing Culture that set them apart. The music is uplifting. It invites self-reflection. It never feels alienating. This, confirms the band, is no accident: “Concepts of spirituality, self actualization, mysticism, new age symbolism and pretty much anything that has to do with humans making sense of why we’re all here are all deep, deep muses for us.” To that point, even the album title Moon Tides alludes to self-discovery: “We are deeply inspired by the relationship between the moon and the tides. Particularly in the sense that the tides and the ocean are comprised of water and the element water is often associated with human emotion.” While these heady themes can be difficult to explore in a pop song, Pure Bathing Culture makes it feel effortless. “Pendulum” is a perfect mid-tempo album opener that pulses and shines. Other standout tracks from the album — “Dream The Dare”, “Twins”, “Scotty” and “Golden Girl” — are slices of reverb-drenched, soulful, danceable electro-pop, that musically and lyrically tap into an introspective worship of the natural and psychic mysteries that surround us. Pure Bathing Culture’s debut album Moon Tides is optimistic modern music for souls who seek to explore the infinite.

Tei Shi Curated by Gorilla vs Bear
Tei Shi is the moniker of Valerie Teicher, a Brooklyn via Bogotá and Vancouver-based vocalist with an affinity towards lush dream pop, airy 90s R&B, mesmerizing soundscapes and hauntingly minimal instrumental foundation. Tei Shi made her stunning introduction to the music world earlier this year, debuting a soulful pop track titled “M&Ms.”
After playing her first set of shows at CMJ 2013, Tei Shi has just released her highly anticipated debut EP, Saudade. The enchanting collection of songs reveal why she is an artist to look out for in 2014.

Residual Kid Curated by SXSW
Enter Austin Texas’ own: Residual Kid. The band, consisting of brothers Ben and Max Redman (drums/ bass respectively) and singer / guitarist Deven Ivy, dance in tornado of distortion and jangle. Underneath the fury lay three ace players inciting crowds with their blend of fuzzy guitars, driving beats, and catchy melodic hooks. Their unpredictable and joyously-chaotic live performances are deceptively tight, showcasing a band who wear their influences on their sleeve while putting their own stamp on modern punk-rock. Their debut EP FACES surfaced in late 2012 and was produced by Frenchie Smith (...Trail of Dead, Meat Puppets, Built to Spill).
Following an impressive showing at SXSW 2013 the band left Texas for the first time performing to a packed crowd of music industry tastemakers on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Immediately following their New York debut they found a manager, signed with BMG Music Publishing and suddenly found themselves on the radar of the music-industry. In 2014 the band spent time in the studio with both J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.) and Steve McDonald (OFF! / Redd Kross) producing new material which is expected to be released sometime in Spring 2014.

Cosmonauts Curated by SXSW
Hailing from the sleepy suburban sprawl of Orange County, California, Cosmonauts forge malcontent drone-pop melodies, delivered with a clangy laser-fuzz backbone. Formed in Summer 2009 by Alexander Ahmadi & Derek Cowart, Cosmonauts offer a glimpse of drug-addled Southern Californian rock n roll in the 21st century. Inspired in equal parts by polo-shirts and MDMA, this four-piece garage-trance outfit has garnered a reputation of amps dialed to ten and lullaby meltdowns with both audiences and contemporaries. Supporting established acts at home & abroad such as The Growlers, The Black Angels, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, The Beach Fossils & more.
Defined by critics as "Beach Boys on downers" & "how Lou Reed wound up wearing that dog collar", these pop-loving, feedback-chasing drop-outs have been releasing records and touring North America and Europe at breakneck speed. Releasing material with labels like Burger Records, Austin's Reverberation Appreciation Society & more. Not to mention a handful of 7" singles released by European & Californian labels. Last year they followed up heir rattling, echo-drenched 2011 debut self-titled LP(Permanent Records) with 2012's If You Wanna Die Then I Wanna Die, released by local-Fullertonian label Burger Records. Both LPs recorded in a renovated Anaheim warehouse, in viewing distance of Disneyland's nightly fireworks.

Dubbed, “Chew it up, Spit it out, Rock and Roll”, Cheers Elephant is a tight, rootsy, psychedelic poprock quartet originally from Philadelphia, now located in LA. 2014 plans include recording a new album as well as extensive touring around Europe and US.
“Sound City Players did 3-plus hours, but my favorite SXSW set came from Philly’s Cheers Elephant: great, hooky indie-pop.” - Eric Danton, Rolling Stone / WSJ Music

Arc Iris Curated by Anti- Records
Arc Iris’s self-titled debut album is out April 1 on Anti- Records. The video for the band’s first single, “Singing So Sweetly,” recently premiered on FILTER’s website and can be streamed on YouTube. Arc Iris is set to embark on a nationwide tour with Nicole Atkins this spring and will be making stops at SXSW Music and Culture Festival in Austin.
Arc Iris is inspired by 70s pop, folk and country traditions, cabaret, jazz and classical. The eclectic new project from the former Low Anthem member draws on diverse music from Led Zeppelin to Grizzly Bear, from Joni Mitchell to Dirty Projectors, and from Miles Davis to Chopin. A singer, multi-instrumentalist, classical composer and former NASA researcher, Adams formed the collective with primary musicians Zach Tenorio-Miller (piano), Ray Belli (drums), Max Johnson (bass), Robin Ryczek (cello) and Mike Irwin (trumpet) among others to present her ambitious new songs. The rhythm section has been playing together since high school and cut their teeth at the School of Rock where they shared a stage with musicians such as Slash, Perry Farrell, Andrew WK, Jon Anderson of Yes and the Butthole Surfers. Arc Iris has recently played shows with Calexico, CocoRosie, Marco Benevento, Menomena, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Patrick Watson and Justin Townes Earle.
Before departing The Low Anthem to form Arc Iris, Adams released two albums with that band, who were praised by the New York Times for music that “inhabits its own otherworldly place, where ghosts and angels hover just out of view” and by Under the Radar for how they “flawlessly balance heartfelt warbles with gritty countryside wail.”

The Melodic Curated by Anti- Records
English afro-folk-pop ensemble The Melodic's debut album Effra Parade is available now via Anti-. It is the follow up to the band's acclaimed EP On My Way. English newspaper The Observer described The Melodic as "Incredibly beautiful, with harmonies and rich instrumentation that make you want to dance and cry at the same time," while in the US the band has drawn comparisons to indie darlings Beirut and The Decemberists.
The Melodic are a quietly radical band. This is the first young English group to lionize Chilean neo-folk rebel Victor Jara since Sandinista-era Clash. Their new album Effra Parade was self-recorded in a sound-proofed bedroom in South London over several years with a baroque line-up of 18 instruments. All the more impressive when you consider they are still in their early twenties.
