Blood, Sweat n Beers. A Kick-Ass Event For Start Ups.
Come join us at RIDE Indoor Cycling for a private RIDE led by the remarkable, David Garza. It's a 45 minute indoor cycling class that will change, direct your intent, and leave you feeling like a bad ass! The music is awesome and the acoustics amazing! David Garza will motivate, inspire, and plug you back in!

It's called a grind for a reason right?!  Day in/day out, you gotta get back on that start up saddle and push those big gears.  Starting or working at a start-up can be one of the most stressful things a person does in his or her life.

I found it hard to make time to get any exercise.  It was not a priority.  My body and mental well-being paid the price.  And that’s a huge part of being a successful founder!  I'm committed to not neglecting my body and am addicted to my classes at RIDE.

Enjoy some craft beer and snacks at this amazing private and intimate event. There will also be lots of much needed water!

Black Social TV: How Black Programming, Viewers an
Almost every Monday night when the Vh1 reality show Love & Hip Hop Atlanta airs, its black and Latina characters, their actions and the title of the show dominate Twitter’s trending topics (they’re often seven of the 10 top trending topics on Twitter). The same happens when other black television and award shows are broadcast. Black shows are not only a television event but they've also become a huge social media affair. African-Americans watch television an additional two hours more than the national average, and African-Americans use Twitter more than other Americans. African-Americans are not just social television participants, they are major players. The rise of social television, watching television and posting on social media simultaneously, has an important impact on television producers, advertisers and viewers. Social media buzz about television shows has created a new barometer for popularity and a crop of apps that allow viewers to connect directly to the producers and cast

OMMA: Should Brands Be Part of the Real-Time Convo?
Since that famous “Oreo Moment” that turned a Super Bowl blackout into a dubious marketing trend, more brands seem to have failed than succeeded at riding the real time zeitgeist. From Kenneth Cole to AT&T to Urban Outfitters, the social media misfires just keep coming. Have marketers learned anything about the dark art of inserting their brands into the trending topic, the cultural moment? Are they just geeks struggling to fit in with the cool kids? Or are we really seeing brands become more human and finding voices through these new direct-to-consumer channels? Sponsored by Media Post.

Scaling at Twitter with Drupal & Thrift
ATTENTION: You must signup in advance to attend this workshop. You will need to have a valid SXSW badge, and an activated SXsocial account. To reserve your seat, please go here: https://sup.sxsw.com/schedule/IAP26451
In this workshop, presented by Twitter's Gazebo team, participants will learn:
1. Why Twitter chose Drupal and how they use it
2. Apache Thrift and the advantages of using it
3. How to use Thrift to connect Drupal to a remote service
By the end of this workshop, participants will have created a Drupal app that uses Thrift to connect to remote service.
Twitter relies on its websites to help it reach every person on the planet. At this scale, Twitter needs a standard way to build, maintain, and operate these websites. The “Gazebo” was introduced as a shared platform and now powers about.twitter.com, engineering.twitter.com, business.twitter.com, and more.
A publishing tool and CMS for non-engineers, this Drupal-based platform allows Twitter to scale consistently across all its sites, leverage existing internal services, and maintain the required level of security.
The Apache Thrift software framework, for scalable cross-language services development, combines a software stack with a code generation engine to build services that work efficiently and seamlessly between various languages. It is used at Twitter to provide interfaces for internal services to allow teams to easily connect and exchange data within our existing platform.
Thrift can seem difficult to setup and implement when compared to alternatives like REST, but there are a number of advantages. Because Thrift generates both client and server interfaces, the result is more consistency and safety with regard to data types and exception handling. In addition to HTTP, Thrift supports other protocols allowing services with large volumes of data to be routed more appropriately.
Participants will create new Drupal modules using the Form API and thrift module to capture form values and send those values to a remote service. These new modules will be used to illustrate transmitting data via Thrift and storing values in a remote key/value store instead of MySQL.
We will discuss how using a key/value store is more efficient and scalable than a standard relational database. Furthermore, we will show the flexibility that Thrift’s abstraction provides and how it applies to other systems including: user authentication, file systems, email services, etc. Time permitting, we will create an additional module that implements sending messages through Thrift when the form is submitted.
Prerequisites:
- Proficiency in PHP and Drupal development
- Solid understanding of full LAMP stack
What to Bring:
- A standard Drupal 7 installation (https://drupal.org/download) configured on top of a LAMP (or WAMP) environment
- Drush (https://github.com/drush-ops/drush) set up and configured to be in the user's path
For example, you should be able to:
$ cd sites/default
$ drush dl token

Taking the Responsive Web to Windows 8
ATTENTION: You must signup in advance to attend this workshop. You will need to have a valid SXSW badge, and an activated SXsocial account. To reserve your seat, please go here: https://sup.sxsw.com/schedule/IAP25597
Formerly a go-to for an easy laugh when in a room full of front end developers, Internet Explorer in its current form is a powerful browser with standards in mind. Not only that, Microsoft gives developers the ability to use IE's engine to develop native applications for Windows 8+. Whether developing for the browser or as a native app, developers can take their favorite tools and practices (responsive design, progressive enhancement) to build great experiences that support keyboard, mouse, touch, and stylus in all the forms Windows 8 devices take.
We will focus on how we can apply what we've learned from developing for different screen sizes and input types to this still young world of Windows 8.
The workshop will begin with a brief introduction to native Windows 8.1 app development (and the associated libraries and toolsets that Microsoft provides). We will then jump into how to apply basic responsive web design principles to our native app development. This will include supporting 8-inch tablets to huge TV screens with various input methods. It also includes how to best support side by side apps with Windows 8's snap mode.
Key takeaways:
- How IE 10+ is different than previous versions of IE and how it forms the basis for native apps
- How to support different screen widths, heights, and orientations, as well as Window's snap mode
- How to always support different inputs (keyboard, touch, mouse, stylus)
- Recreate gestures and interactions specific to Windows 8 (such as Semantic Zoom)
- Understand CSS Multicolumn layout
- Understand the Promise pattern in JavaScript
Prerequisites:
- Basic understanding of HTML/CSS/JS
- Basic understanding of Responsive Web Design
What to Bring:
- We will be working through code, and the sample code will be provided.
- If you want to work along with the examples (not required) you will need a machine with Windows 8.1 and Visual Studio 2013 (Express version is available free on Microsoft's website).

Unstructure: Smashing the Boundaries of Data
ATTENTION: You must signup in advance to attend this workshop. You will need to have a valid SXSW badge, and an activated SXsocial account. To reserve your seat, please go here: https://sup.sxsw.com/schedule/IAP25173
When it comes to thinking about data, most software designers are stuck in a rigid, 2-dimensional mindset: "rows and columns." A shame, because breaking free from this "tyranny of the table" can bring our software to new heights: intuitive user experiences, fast development iterations, and cohesive apps.
In this workshop, we'll cover a few concepts that bring data design out of the 1970s, like: sparse representation, emergent schema, ultra-structure, prototype-driven design, graph theory, traversing the time dimension, and more. We'll run the gamut of philosophical approaches to understanding what is important in your mental (and software) model, and how to transcend your two-dimensional picture of data, and trade it in for an N-dimensional one.
Working hands-on with a simple "mock company" and its new killer app, you'll learn:
* The basic concepts of data design: entities, relationships, attributes, and types (along with a few better ways to notate them)
* How to experiment with creating these data structures in a couple existing cloud-based frameworks (e.g. google apps engine, force.com, heroku, etc.).
* How emergent techniques like schema-on-read and ultra-structure can simplify modeling (or, sometimes, complicate it)
* How statistical techniques from the data mining world can loosen our insistence on rigid models
* Why the time dimension is important (in data as well as schema)
Prerequisites:
- Prior familiarity with databases and SQL will enrich your experience of this workshop, but is not required; all the hands-on work will be done step-by-step and can be followed even if it's your first time seeing anything data-related.
What to Bring:
- Bring a laptop with (a) a modern web browser (Chrome is probably your best bet, as we'll be working with some Google apps), and (b) a unix-style command line (so, either a Mac, a Unix/Linux box, or Windows with Cygwin).

Digital Disruption - The Next Wave of Innovation
If iPad Nation were a country, by the end of 2013 it would be the 7th largest in the world, on its way to being 5th by mid-year 2014. From Kickstarter to Mommy bloggers, never before have so many people had so many cheap and free tools to bring their ideas to the marketplace. And never before have so many people wanted to have a say -- big and small -- in the way we live our lives. This is digital disruption, not just a technology phenomenon, not just a business phenomenon, but an ongoing process for freeing people to think, act, and disrupt with greater effect than before. In this session, McQuivey, author of the acclaimed book Digital Disruption, will read selections from his book and share behind-the-scenes of his work with some of the largest companies in the world as they struggle to realize that they must exploit digital tools and platforms to disrupt or be disrupted.

The Power of Public Thinking
We write 3.6 trillion words online -- every single day. How is this explosion of online expression changing the way we think? In this talk, based on my book "Smarter Than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds for the Better", I describe the value of "public thinking" and the science behind it. I'll look at how our everyday acts of communication -- each tweet, each text, each post in an Instagram thread -- shapes our cognition, triggers the "audience effect", and connects ideas together. Thinking in public helps us crystalize our thoughts and collectively tackle problems to big for each of us alone; in my talk, I'll explain how.

Online LEGO Fans & the People Who Love Them
LEGO fans make up one of the most enthusiastic online fan communities in existence. We don’t mean kids within the product target group; we mean the teen and adult fans. That’s right: Adult fans!
By nature, these fans build what appeals to grown-ups, and that doesn't always fit well with the company line. So how does The LEGO Group nurture these online fans while not pissing them off?
ReBrick.com and LEGO CUUSOO are LEGO Group online communities for adult fans to share user-created LEGO content (although there are many more fan created communities). It is created as a social collaboration between the LEGO Group and the LEGO fans.
Every day, we balance between brand values and fan culture within these online fan communities. As companies grow, their fan base grows as well, and many companies aren’t prepared for what that means. Do not kid yourself - fans means business!

Author Ernie Cline Discusses His New Novel Armada
Ernie Cline, author of the New York Times and internationally bestselling novel Ready Player One, discusses his eagerly anticipated new novel Armada, including the surprising inspirations for the novel and how deeply it draws on his lifelong obsessions with science-fiction novels, films, and the transportive power of videogames. Ernie also talks about his experience publishing his debut, Ready Player One, a tale involving a cross-country journey via time-traveling DeLorean and a remarkable multi-platform contest that mirrored the treasure hunt in the book’s pages—and culminated with giving away a car on national cable television. He also touches on his adventures in Hollywood, from his current work with Universal and Warner Bros. to his early traumatic experiences with the film Fanboys.
This SXSW Gaming Session at the Long Center is FREE and open to the public. However SXSW Interactive, Film, Gold and Platinum badges gain priority seating.

Big Data Inverted: The Best Candy from Strangers?
In our increasingly digital and technology-driven world, human social relationships are being transformed by data. Your previous online behavior is dictating the news reports, friends’ updates, products and advertisements you receive. With algorithms are determining the content we’re exposed to, people are beginning to unintentionally “barricade” themselves from new experiences and information that don’t fit the pattern of what they’ve already liked and experienced.
In this panel, renowned researchers and digital anthropologists tackle this phenomenon to explore the implications of a “barricaded” society, dissect the current and future obstacles, identify the opportunity for innovation, and provide a call for technology to deliver us to what and who we need, even if it’s unfamiliar.

Content & Commerce: The Digital Cronut
The doughnut and croissant have operated alongside each other for years, each awesome in their own way. Until one day, you bring them together and witness the magic unfold – The Cronut. Content and Commerce is the next epic hybrid.

Publishers that have built trust with their audience can monetize the intent they create through integrated commerce that actually puts merchandise in the hands of consumers. Browsers on the commerce side can be turned into engaged readers, improving the chances of converting them back into buyers, and monetizing their engagement through ad dollars.

This is a discussion for any content or commerce brand looking to propel their business forward. You’ll hear from leading content/commerce brand, Thrillist Media Group’s CEO Ben Lerer as he describes the changing media and e-commerce landscapes, best practices for adding a content or commerce channel to your business, and what the potential benefits and risks will be.

Doctor’s Offices on Their Death Bed
“One of my tricks for generating startup ideas is to imagine the ways in which we'll seem backward to future generations. And I'm pretty sure that to people 50 or 100 years in the future, it will seem barbaric that people in our era waited till they had symptoms to be diagnosed with conditions like heart disease and cancer,” said Paul Graham, Y Combinator. Technology and policy are colliding to transform the patient experience. New devices are delivering continuous streams of health data to patients, who in turn are expecting physicians to engage with them via modern communication channels. Meanwhile, bundled payments and Accountable Care Organizations are changing incentives for doctors and payers, leading savvy physician-entrepreneurs to invent new patient-provider-payer models. As this explosion occurs will doctor’s offices soon be a legacy artifact of non-competitive providers? Join the debate with the innovators driving change from both the patient and physician perspective!

Ethics & Future of Crowdfunding for Communities
Crowdfunding is grassroots community engagement. Its powerful approach to fundraising and brandraising leverages the speed and reach of the Internet -- as well as advocates’ networks -- to acquire more donors and raise more money for community causes. But donors are realizing not all crowdfunding models are created equally when it comes to ensuring that their donation is used effectively. As crowdfunding grows, so do the ethical questions around legitimate "fundraising" and what constitutes them. This discussion will touch on examples of crowdfunding from self-starting "fund my trip" models to the more established national community foundation-led model with profound local impact that raise over $20 million in one day, and the various ethical questions associated with them. Session participants will work together to build a crowdfunding bill of rights by the end of the discussion.

Followers Attached
Anyone launching a new brand today hopes that their product, service or solution will become the darling of the industry--the thing that goes viral because people love it. Veteran brand strategist Laurence Vincent will share compelling insights on brand attachment, an oft-overlooked dimension of consumer behavior. Drawing on findings from published research and ongoing fieldwork, Vincent will explain why consumers become attached to or develop an aversion to certain brands. He'll demonstrate how to measure attachment, and how it differs from other brand dimensions. Specifically, he'll demonstrate how attachment has been proven to be a better predictor of consumer behavior than mere measures of likability.
This material has not been presented before and features new research data that makes a compelling case for entrepreneurs and seasoned brand managers to focus their attention on getting people (consumers, investors, employees) attached to their brands and keeping it that way.

FYI Managers: People Don’t Want to Work at Home
It’s true – studies show people prefer working from an office, but the growing list of today’s unusual perks (onsite haircuts, slides and bowling alleys) do little to address the real plight of today’s office worker: an environment that optimizes efficiency. How do you allow employees to avoid impromptu desk visits from co-workers (cited as the number one office distraction) one moment, while simultaneously providing a shared collaboration space for the next? How can you move past the limitations of the dreaded “cube” office configuration, while preventing possible team alienation from a newsroom-like setting? In this interactive panel, learn from Ask.com, one of the biggest tech employers in the Bay Area, who polled its employees – and the nation at large - to find out what office workers really want in the workplace. And you might be surprised at the results.

The data stockpile is on. Mobile is entering a new era of intelligence in which data is free to capture, for those who know how to do it. This panel will detail how behavioral intelligence and its associated technologies are changing how mobile marketers are thinking about personalization. Through the implementation of passive content progression, or the passive collection and analysis of behavioral data, marketers can begin to connect the dots of an individual's behavior and create more effective targeting strategies.

Music for Video Game Marketing
Some of the most creative and successful video game marketing campaigns have tapped into the power of original music production to raise awareness of the game, to expand its creative universe, and to feed fans' insatiable appetites.
By creating original content for a marketing campaign, video game publishers have complete control over the use of the music. As popularity of the song grows and takes on a life of its own, all attention shifts back to the game itself.
A panel of composers, producers, advertising creatives and video game publishers will discuss what makes a great musical strategy for video game marketing, share stories of creative music production, and give insight into how campaigns have adapted to take advantage of the music's success.

Network Design Thinking & Black Male Engagement
Trayvon Martin makes the headlines because black men are often portrayed as burdens, rather than assets to their communities. The Knight Foundation worked with Context Partners to help change this script, starting with Detroit and Philadelphia. In talking with dozens of black males across these cities, the everyday stories of unsung heroes were uncovered—forming a shared positive identity for black men across the US. Learn how the Black Male Engagement (BMe) network was built to engage, identify and publicly celebrate black men who are giving back to their communities. These stories include Shaka Senghor and Yusef Shakur who met in prison and together vowed to change this fate for boys in their community. As members of BMe, Shaka and Yusef got the support they needed to scale their programs and reach more youth in underserved Detroit neighborhoods. Learn how aspirational networks are built through co-designing with your community.

OMMA: What Do Marketers Want from Mobile?
Marketers are confronting an “omnichannel” world where consumers consult multiple sources and screens, sometimes making buying decisions in minutes. Brands need to be in customer pockets to capture those impulses at all times, via mobile apps, mobile commerce, mobile social presence, and mobile loyalty. Devices have made it possible to enhance and enrich the path to purchase down to and including the in-store experience. But what have these brands learned about the new mobilized consumer and what is in store for us next?

The *Real* Crowdfunding Investment
You've heard about rewards based crowdfunding (the Kickstarters, and Indigogos) of the world, but do you know about equities crowd funding?
With the anticipated Title III new regulations of the J.O.B.S (Jumpstart Our Business Startups) Act, which will allow for crowd funding on equities investments by accredited and unaccredited investors. Anticipated regulations will create a new asset class of investors with financial contributions making investments in businesses seeking new growth and ROI.
What does this mean to the crowd funding market? How can issuers and investors get educated in this "new asset class" and on potential opportunities for investors and/or investments?

The BRCK - Designing from the Rest of the World
Ushahidi is from Kenya; we know how hard it can be to get connected. Those who lack connectivity are at a disadvantage to their more connected peers. Yet the equipment used to connect in Kenya or India is the same as that used in New York and London, even though the conditions are completely different. The modems used around the world were designed for the USA more than a decade ago. They assume ubiquitous electricity connection, years of fiber infrastructure, and are designed for a desktop computer sitting in an office. That scenario is outdated. It’s not the use-case for the one billion additional people who are expected to get online by 2015. At Ushahidi, we face this problem all the time, we live it. So we set out to redesign the way we connect to the Internet for the developing world, and thus created The BRCK. We learned how important it is for solutions to come from the places where the problems reside. A maker culture of problem solvers is burgeoning in the developing world.

Billions of people are coming online in the next decade. Their physical lives, human rights, and civic relationships will be forever altered. Google’s Eric Schmidt and Jared Cohen tackle some of the most interesting questions about our future: how will technology change privacy and security, war and intervention, diplomacy, revolution and terrorism? How will technology improve our lives? What new disruptions can we expect?

Transparency Reporting for Beginners
Since Google published its first “transparency report” in 2010, many other Internet companies large and small have started issuing there own reports on government demands for user data. And now, in light of recent revelations about the scope of the National Security Agency's surveillance of the Internet through programs like “PRISM”, a broad coalition of companies, privacy advocates and transparency experts have joined together to demand that the government allow even more reporting about national security surveillance. Come learn from some of those companies, advocates and experts about the opportunities and challenges that come with doing your own transparency reporting, and hear why transparency reporting is good for privacy and free speech, good for democracy, good for your company’s bottom line, and good for the Internet industry as a whole.

Workplace Redesign: The Big Shift from Efficiency
We have become adept at applying design thinking and methodologies to the design of products and customer engagement experiences. Isn’t it about time we apply this same thinking to our own work environments? We all recognize that talent is becoming central to business success. Most companies focus on talent attraction and retention. Yet, there’s a missing middle here – talent development? When the topic comes up, we tend to fall back to thinking about training programs. Yet, the most powerful learning and talent development occurs on the job. What if we reconceive our work environment to include not only our own employees, but everyone outside the organization who has relevant expertise to help us learn faster? What would such workplaces look like? How would they function? If we get this right, we can move from a world of diminishing returns to increasing returns, where the more participants who join in, the faster everyone will learn by working together.

Visual Magic in Computers, History & Future
Synopsis: This presentation was designed for anyone who ever looked at a fantastic adventure or science fiction movie, or an amazingly complex and rich computer game, or a TV commercial where cars or gas pumps or biscuits behaved liked people and wondered, “How do they do that”?
The cold war may have been the catalyst but it’s impossible to trace a single line of development to the beautiful and realistic images being created with computers. There is the computer itself, the basic math, the display and its controller, and the software algorithms used to generate curves and textures, and the applications that tie it all together.
Computer graphics are used in so many places: automotive design, movies, architecture, games, molecular design, and simulation/visualization of imaginary worlds and atomic bombs and the course of development is far from run.
3D in computers began as a way to represent automotive designs and illustrate the

Getting Started with Teaching Game Design
In this presentation, we will show some beginning basics to get you started, give student examples, and show how Scratch can be applied across the curriculum. You will discover how to get students interested in basic game programming and design and get them involved in animation, drawing, interactive art, games, math, music, simulations, and even a possible contest. While this presentation will only "Scratch" the basics, it will leave you and your students scratching for more.
Scratch is a free programming language developed by and made available through MIT. What makes Scratch unique is the way it allows students to easily create their own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art. Best of all, they can share their creations on the worldwide web, collaborate with others as they create, share, remix, and recreate! Scratch certainly goes beyond STEM by bringing in just about anything.
This SXSW Gaming Session at the Long Center is FREE and open to the public. However SXSW Interactive, Film, Gold and Platinum badges gain priority seating.

The 10 Best Startups in Austin
Come see 10 of Austin's startups pitch at the Capital Factory Demo Day. Austin's startup scene is booming, and we meet every one of them.
The best ones join our community and are matched up with successful entrepreneurs as mentors. They have competed in a series of pitch elimination rounds to narrow it down to the 10 you'll see at SXSW.
These startups have traction, most are generating revenue, and a few are already profitable. Most have raised less than $1 million and are focused on acquiring enough customers to become profitable as their next milestone. A few are making bigger bets that will require more capital.
Come see the very best that Austin has to offer and kick off SXSW at the main event of the Startup Village.
Afterwards, we'll have an OPEN BAR and time for the everyone to meet the startups that presented in this event and the Win $200,000 to Move Your Startup to Austin competition just prior.

Unearthing the Atari Graveyard: The Search for ET
In May 2013, creative studio and game developer Fuel Entertainment was officially granted permission to excavate within a 100-acre landfill in the Alamogordo, New Mexico desert. The goal? Search for the fabled Atari E.T. Graveyard - the alleged 1983 dump site of the mother lode of video game overstocks. Along with this, they will document the process, the discovery, and the history of one of gaming's first major blunders.
In this presentation, join Fuel and the exciting soon-to-be-announced production partners involved in the dig (currently scheduled to occur within the next few months) to discuss the results, the experience, the motivations, and the mishaps of looking for the 'El Dorado' of video game culture.
This SXSW Gaming Session at the Long Center is FREE and open to the public. However SXSW Interactive, Film, Gold and Platinum badges gain priority seating.

Monkeys with Lazers: How MailChimp Does AI
MailChimp.com enables its 3 million users to send 5 billion email newsletters each month. The site is key to many nonprofits’ and small businesses’ efforts to stay in conversation with their audiences.
MailChimp's success and rapid growth are attributable to its design, ease-of-use, and fanatical attention to the user experience. And because of this success, the company is swimming in data.
MailChimp doesn't need to use this data – it doesn’t have to build AI models. The company is focused on user experience, not analytics, not data-driven advertising, not dynamic pricing. But MailChimp realized that its data could improve the site’s user experience in ways that were complementary to its focus on clean design.
This talk will cover the AI modeling architecture MailChimp has set up for its internal compliance efforts and its user-facing audience segmentation products. The organizational, cultural, and technical challenges faced in releasing these AI models will be discussed.

Starting Up in a Man’s World
In 2010, I took the stage at an entrepreneurship competition. While I stood up there, I didn’t notice that the other four finalists were male until the organizer gave us our awards. Along with a plaque, they gave me a man’s watch and a bottle of cologne.
Women start only 3% of technology companies and are generally absent from the core teams. I co-founded my company when I was only 15 -- while I was still too young to realize that women are treated differently in the startup world. I’m realizing that my journey as an entrepreneur, the way I am treated in the tech space, and even my demeanor is very different from my male counterparts, but I think the personality traits I have that are stereotypically female, can be a huge strength in the entrepreneurial adventure.
I will discuss how I co-founded a company at the age of 15 and merged with a public company in a $100 million deal shortly after graduating from college.

Arena vs. Couch: The Battle of Game Day Experience
Tricked-out home entertainment systems and rising ticket prices make it easier than ever for sports fans to skip the stadium and watch from home. It's increasingly difficult to compete with the creature comforts of a 70-inch screen and beers from the fridge. The future of sports entertainment will be determined by how teams, media companies and tech upstarts package experiences to engage fans. Is it software-driven stadiums or HD and the second screen? And how do we keep the authenticity of the stadium experience in the era of pull-to-refresh iPhones and iPads?
SF Giants Social Media Director, Bryan Srabian; Univ. of Michigan Athletics Director, Digital Marketing, Jordan Maleh; and tech startup, SportStream, CEO Bob Morgan are top contenders in bringing fans exactly what they want, wherever they want. Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand will lead a discussion to uncover how these leaders apply technology and social media to attract fans to their experiences in venue and out. Social on the Field: Sports Stars & Social Goals
"Stop your tweeting and focus on the game!" Sports stars have incredible power through social media - often more than their club. It is a new frontier of fan and brand engagement - but the rough comes with the smooth and there are hazards as well as opportunities. Performance on the field matters most - so is social a distraction? A hindrance or a help? Brands want athlete affirmation but when the haters have their say, how do you handle it? This panel will look at the correlation between social media performance and performance on the field - including what it's like from the player perspective. Talking the Talk: Sports Lingo in Pop Culture
Sports matter. Their marquee events -- the Olympics, various world championships, most prominently the World Cup in soccer, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the UEFA Champions League Final, the NBA and NHL finals, the America's Cup, the four Slams in tennis and the four majors in golf to mention but a few -- have become global icons known to and loved by billions. But parallel to this globalized quality, sports also retain something deeply local. Thus, while the University of Texas Longhorns embody a quasi-religious entity in Austin and environs, they remain largely unknown beyond the confines of the United States. This "glocal" (Roland Robertson) quality of modern sports has important cultural and linguistic ramifications. Comparing the trends of the past two decades to parallel developments shaping modern sports cultures between 1860 and 1914, the session will highlight specific American cultural and linguistic developments to comparable phenomena in Europe. This session is part of the brand new SXsports programming at SXSW 2014.

Always Be Innovating: Thinking Like a Startup
Every startup raves about innovation, but how does it work within a large company? As technology changes and consumer demand shifts, it’s vital for companies big and small to question and re-evaluate their strategies. Adopting the startup mentality is key and pretending to be a “lean startup” isn’t always enough. While some have created internal research and development teams, others have acquired companies or been acquired themselves, while continuing to work independently. Whether you’re a big brand or a startup that has momentum but is not yet mainstream, how do you keep the wheels of innovation turning without cannibalizing your money-making product? EasilyDo, Zite and Tagged executives will provide an in-depth look at how to inject originality and novelty into your company, regardless of its size. You’ll hear about the pros and cons of acquiring innovation versus creating a labs team and stories of hackathon style overnight experiments that turned into huge wins.

Building Empathic Games for Healthy Outcomes
As anyone who cried when Aeris died knows, it’s easy to fall in love with your favourite game character. One of gaming's biggest strengths is the ability to allow players to form deep emotional bonds with characters. Empathizing with characters helps players understand themselves and others. Navigating difficult scenarios in a game world helps us manage our lives and provides a sense of belonging.
Games have enormous potential to be used as interventions for mental health promotion, but the majority of mainstream games don't address mental health and inclusion in a purposeful way.
Game designers working on LongStory, a queer-positive dating game for pre-teens, will lead a conversation on narrative and choice mechanics that call for empathy, growth and reflection. We invite gamers, interactive designers, health care professionals and entrepreneurs to discuss with us how designers can include white-label health interventions in their games to build emotional resilience through play.

Building Your Startup with the Crowd's Help
Building a startup is hard. Really hard. It's a whirlwind experience that requires boldness to win in today’s market.
The latest technology companies understand what it takes to win and are adapting their go-to-market strategies accordingly. They’re infusing “the crowd” of potential customers into every stage of the startup journey – from researching their market and beta testing to launch and post launch marketing activities. And they’re doing it in the unlikeliest of markets – B2B technology.
This shift represents a change in not only the types of businesses that are and will emerge in the future, but how those businesses go to market, build advocates, and foster a sense of community around their products and services.
This panel will explore new routes to market technology companies are taking, how they’re tapping the crowd to help, and the impact a “social first” strategy can have on the next wave of technology companies.

Clubbing the Patent Trolls: How We Can Fight Back
Innovators face a growing epidemic of litigation from so-called "patent trolls" - companies that do not make or produce products, but sue those who do. Last year the majority of patent lawsuits were brought by such entities, at an estimated overall cost to the US economy of $20B.
Patent trolls use broad and vaguely-worded patents to bring infringement claims against innovators, and demand payment of a "license" to avoid a lawsuit. They are able to exploit the legal system because they know that the cost of defending a lawsuit can range into the millions of dollars - more than the victim is able to pay.
Once primarily a problem for large companies, today's cost common patent troll targets are small startups that do not have significant resources or legal departments.
This panel presents a leading Member of Congress along with innovators and public policy advocates discussing how we can protect ourselves from the patent lawsuit tsunami.

Evil By Design: Leading Customers into Temptation
I'm going to show you how to make your customers happy using techniques that are normally employed by the lowest of the low; con-men, pick-up artists, used car salesmen, and as-seen-on-tv marketers.
You'll learn that it's OK to deceive people, and that in fact we do it all the time already. Using examples from the web and the real world, I'll show that not all deception is bad. In fact, there's a continuum from evil, through commercial and motivational to charitable deception. Customers themselves are often complicit in the deception - they *want* to be deceived!
Rather than the futile task of trying not to deceive, instead ask what your motives are for deceiving. Learn the design patterns, notice when they are being used against you, and most of all, when you design products make sure you are deceiving for good, not for evil.
This is a lighthearted yet serious dissection of dark patterns with a focus on the ethics of persuasive design and practical tips for delighting customers.

Fashion Retail Solutions: Beyond the Marketplace
Online retail is evolving from a simple shopping cart transaction to an end-to-end emotional engagement with one’s consumer base. While this is true for most industries, it is even more so the case when it comes to consumer fashion, where behavior is as concerned with ideas of self-expression and identity, as with the product itself. To date a dominant "Amazon" for fashion has yet to emerge. We question if, as opposed to when, such a powerful player will ever emerge. What do we see in its place? We see bespoke fashion retail models, converging both online and offline channels, constructed around a brand's consumer's behavior. This panel will explore and critique the various retail solutions open to emerging and established fashion brands.

Frugal Innovation: Simple Designs to Improve Lives
80% of humanity lives on less than $10/day. If you are part of the world's lowest socioeconomic level you may be living in a house that can barely be called that. It's a collection of sticks, cardboard, plastic sheet. A dirt floor, no water, electricity or sewage. Enter frugal innovation or frugal engineering: The process of reducing the complexity and cost of a good and its production. Usually this refers to removing nonessential features from a durable good in order to sell it in developing countries. In this presentation we explore simple, low cost, effective and proven global design solutions that do not require exotic technology but that when combined can dramatically improve the quality of life of people around the world. Recent examples of successful design that have raised living standards in developing countries will be shown.

User experience has become a ubiquitous buzzword in the tech and design field. Equally as ubiquitous is the association of "user experience" with the title "designer". Which is irritating.
This talk is about my journey into UX and my struggle to accept the "designer" label - the expectations of what I do vs. what I actually do vs. what I think I do.
It is structured and modeled after the 5 stages of grieving: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

Make Yourself Big: How the Body Shapes the Mind
Professor Amy Cuddy’s fascinating experimental research reveals how your nonverbal behavior not only affects how others see you; it also affects how you see yourself, your testosterone and cortisol levels, risk tolerance, performance, and important life outcomes. Humans and non-humans express confidence and power through open, expansive postures, known as power poses (think: Wonder Woman). Power posing – for as little as two minutes before a stressful performance -- can actually alter an individual at the biological level, preparing the brain to perform well in high-stakes situations. Learn about the science behind this minimal self-nudge, and how it is being used in leadership training, athletic coaching, managing chronic pain, reducing test anxiety, debate preparation, confronting prejudice, anti-bullying interventions, and even horse training. In Cuddy’s session you’ll discover how your body shapes your mind, your mind shapes your behavior, and your behavior shapes your outcomes.

Millennials As Supervisors: Strategies for Success
The Millennial generation, born between 1980-2000, is moving into manager and leadership positions rapidly with a desire to excel. They have a workplace style that is vastly different than their predecessors. Raised in a praise-based culture, college-bound since kindergarten, Millennials have been protected from failure by over-engaged parents. They have not bought into ‘climbing the corporate ladder and paying their dues’ and instead value equality over hierarchy. Millennials seek flexible schedules as well as time for personal pursuits yet they expect to make an impact immediately. They are comfortable challenging authority and the status quo and bring these values into leadership and management roles. They perform best when using their strengths; learn how focusing on strengths makes transitions into leadership and supervisory roles more successful. Understand what types of training and mentorship this generation of leaders needs to be more productive and engaged in their work.

Mission-Driven Accelerators
There has been a proliferation of accelerators across the globe, and now across various "verticals" like energy, finance, hardware, etc.
But there is another emergent theme of mission-driven accelerators who marry a public purpose - such as media, education, environment - with a core entrepreneurial structure that syncs up with the broader movement.
In this conversation the founding team of Matter (http://www.matter.vc) invite others in the space to join a discussion of how these experiments are faring, the hypotheses and philosophies that guide them, and the lessons learned so far.
Matter itself is a relatively new (launched in December 2012) accelerator based in San Francisco, supporting media entrepreneurs who are building a more informed, connected and empowered society.
While we will discuss Matter the conversation is intended to be inclusive of other similar efforts, and the perspectives of entrepreneurs and investors in attendance.

Open Source Licenses for Makers & Humans
The ideology of open source is simple: Share what you make, collaborate with others to improve it, and repeat. This started out in software, but has exploded into all areas of creativity. Hardware, art, music, and even culture are embracing the power of open source methods. The key to how all of this works lies in the licensing, and that is far from simple. Copyright, trademarks, and patents are leveraged in creative ways in the open source legal universe. The trick is to strike the right balance of protecting your legal rights and embracing openness. Thankfully, there are a lot of existing licenses for you to use! In this session, I will discuss how open source licenses work, help makers understand how to pick the correct licenses for their needs, and help humans understand what licenses mean (and how to comply with them).

Privacy: What Your Car Tells the World About You
One of the foremost issues today in connected technologies is privacy, and more specifically, who controls personal data – the individual who uses the technology, the company that produced the technology or the government? When it comes to intelligent cars, privacy concerns are heightened since the vehicles are inherently connected to systems that track all kinds of personal and technical information. Is the intelligent car the new portal through which your data will be shared with the world? What are the roles of private industry and the government when it comes to automotive data?

Re-Creating the Business of Health
Sensors, apps, and social networks are converging with new expectations to create better care and an improved user experience. 3-D printing and robotics are moving into the mainstream and must be convenient and accessible by user research and design. The empowered patient is increasingly aware that they are to assume a greater role in healthcare but they need tools, strategies, and support to assist them in becoming informed and engaged medical consumers who make a positive impact on the quality of their healthcare. Creating delivery methods for ideas and technologies emerging in academic institutions, research labs, startups, and large organizations, these presenters shape the design of products, services and businesses in the healthcare space. This session will describe the changing dynamics in healthcare innovation: from the technology, to the design of the product, to the design of the business, all toward meeting the needs of patients and the systems in which they interact.

Taking the Collaborative Economy to Space
Jeremiah Owyang has shown that the future of business lies in the Collaborative Economy, “an economic model of shared ownership and access between people, startups and corporations all working together.” There’s been a long debate of building collaborative public and private partnerships to improve global relations and create a new global economy, but many argue that we’re constrained by our current constructs. But what if society moves in a different direction – more specifically, upward, to space? As the idea of colonizing space becomes closer to reality, is it safe to say the space economy can be the first true realization of the collaborative economy? What would this look like? Our panelists will discuss the strengths and opportunities for the traditional and space economies today and envision what the new space economy will look like, within the construct of the collaborative economy.

The Onions of Interactive Infographic Design
HTML is a powerful platform for weaving a story of data through interactivity and motion. What could otherwise be dry, stale, or rather boring information suddenly becomes vibrant, engaging, and entertaining. Interactive infographics make it possible for you to truly capture your audience and engage with them in a manner that simply is not possible when merely citing dry facts or statistics. HTML gives you an entirely new medium for presenting the story of your data.

The web isn’t static; your data shouldn’t be either.

This session will cover the value of creating animated, interactive infographics with HTML your readers care about using Adobe Edge Animate. We’ll show some real-world examples of web-based infographic design and walk through some steps to get you started with your own infographics using Edge Animate.
Sponsored by Adobe.

The Secret Sauce of Real Time Storytelling
Real-time storytelling allows the audience to actively participate in the making of a story or advertisement. A recent example of ours, “Remote Control Tourist,” exemplifies this concept. For this, we used Twitter and Facebook to bring a global audience of 150 million people together into a live-streaming experience in which they navigated real-life tourists through an entire city. The story’s end: the first of its kind crowdsourced city guide.
It’s this blend between show production, social media and interactivity that provides the model for the evolution of storytelling. This panel will discuss the unique creative, social media and production methods used to create this type of show or advertisement. Tool is uniquely positioned to provide this kind of insight having produced several projects in this category ranging from the interactive reality show “Screw*d” to the social documentary for the launch of Gran Turismo 6 “First Love” to “Remote Control Tourist”.

Think Content First, Navigation Second
As product design, user interfaces and frameworks are all converging to humanize technology and make it all about the complete user experience, valuable, relevant content is the currency of the new digital economy. Users expect immediate value the second they click on a link or land on a homepage. They want, and need, to connect to the products or services right away, regardless of the device they're using. They long to be part of the story of the brand and be turned into brand advocates and evangelists. After examining why digital entrepreneurs of all stripes should only build their ideas, business and product offerings around what their current/future users value most, Jon Setzen will provide a roadmap to help them navigate today's content-centric online world where it only takes 50 milliseconds for users (aka potential customers) to form a first impression.

Viral Sucks
It’s the absolute worst word that can come out of someone’s mouth. Whether a colleague, boss, client, or a doctor, if you hear the word “viral” you’re in trouble. Someone probably read "The Tipping Point" but skipped "The Outliers," or read the Cliff’s Notes on "Groundswell" and completely missed the point. Someone that thinks that all we need is for “that one idea” that is so funny, so clever, or so disruptive (without actually changing the way we’ve always done business, of course) that it will [gulp] “go viral” and our sales will go through the roof. “Go” and “viral” rarely belong in the same sentence. Let's talk about it. In this session, we'll explore unrealistic expectations, poor planning, and the belief that being really clever and hoping to get lucky trumps being really strategic and working hard to make success happen. What Would Cesar Chavez Tweet? Latinos & New Media
We have witnessed social media’s power to topple governments and change public policy. This shift in political power is enabling the general public to engage in the democratic process like never before.
One wonders how civil rights leaders and trailblazers that changed our nation in the last century would have used social media tools. Would they have had a more immediate impact, and could they have mobilized even greater droves of people? What would Cesar Chavez tweet?
As the Latino community grows both in size and its use of mobile technology, the potential for social media to empower this formerly disenfranchised group is greater than ever. This panel provides first-hand accounts of Latino-led campaigns that successfully supported for the confirmations of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez, and support for immigration reform. We will present an insider look on how these campaigns were run, and the contributions of social media to these campaigns.

Why Content + Scale = A Win for Game Advertising
Gaming is an advertising medium which is driven by engaging content and cross-platform solutions and, increasingly, brands are taking notice with higher advertising spending across console, social and mobile.
During this informative and fun session, we will focus on the content and audience of today’s game play which is the focus of the IAB Games Committee. Win $200,000+ to Move Your Startup to Austin!
We don’t need to convince entrepreneurs to move to Austin - almost every day we receive emails from people deciding to do that on their own!
Maybe it’s because Austin is the most cost-effective place to launch a startup or the pipeline of talent coming out of the University of Texas. Maybe it’s because of the 300+ days of sunshine each year or the vibrant live music scene. It’s no surprise that Austin is one of the fastest growing cities in the US and everyone wants to live somewhere that is growing and booming versus the alternative.
So why should we put together a $50,000 cash investment prize, more than $150,000 in other prizes, and roll out the red carpet to bring one more startup here? Come find out...
5 startups will compete for a cash investment, office space, housing, moving expenses, free groceries and more in an epic pitch competition.

Work & Flexibility: Why Women Must Lead the Way
The last year has seen an explosion of examples of women helping women—in business. From women founding companies at 1.5 times the rate of men, to businesses specifically focused on helping women navigate their careers and build their own companies, to the national conversation around workplace flexibility, leaning in and leaning out! It’s an important trend that seems to be hitting its stride, with the potential to tip the scales toward a flexible workplace culture that will ultimately allow ALL businesses -- both small and large -- hire and retain top talent.
Presenters Stacey Delo, founder of Maybrooks.com, a community for working moms, and Diana Rothschild, founder of NextKids (part of NextSpace), a coworking space that includes on-site infant and toddler care, will share inspiring examples of how women in tech are breaking the rules to do interesting work and still have a life (!), and how the tech industry is poised to lead the rest of corporate America in this effort.

Your Founder Is Your Product Manager
Since most start-ups are operating on a tight budget, hiring a Product Manager is often delayed until the business begins to scale. However, for start-ups to be successful the product management function still needs to be performed by somebody. In most cases that person is the Founder or CEO, who often lack product management training.
In this session a panel of experienced Product Managers and start-up Founders will review the basic principles of product management that every start-up leader should know , including problem identification, market analysis, and feature prioritization. In addition methods for transitioning the product management role from the Founder to the first Product Manager will be presented.

Accessibility: Make It Happen!
ATTENTION: You must signup in advance to attend this workshop. You will need to have a valid SXSW badge, and an activated SXsocial account. To reserve your seat, please go here: https://sup.sxsw.com/schedule/IAP24940
You pride yourself on making great websites. But are they really? Odds are that every day someone can’t use your site because of physical limitations. Maybe he can’t hear the informative tutorial that brought him to your site in the first place. She may not be able to fill out forms that she needs to because they’re not screen reader-friendly. Because he has a visual deficit, he can't read your well-written content—there’s no distinguishing your subtle light grey text from your charcoal background. Or maybe she can’t navigate your menus because using a mouse is not an option. How great is your site for her?
Let us guess why you aren’t building sites these people can use:
• You don’t know how and don’t think you have the time to learn.
• People with disabilities don't need to use your site.
• Your client doesn’t want to pay for you to fix it and your PM says you don't have time for it.
• The site's design will suffer under the constraints of accessibility standards.
• You can't use any client-side scripting or multimedia if the site is going to be accessible.
But you've been misled. Making your site usable for everyone is one of the simplest—and most important—things you can do. So take pride in your craft and make sure everyone can appreciate what you put out there!
In this workshop, which is specially tailored for developers, designers, and project managers just getting started with accessibility, we’ll look at, with some levity, the barriers your disabled users encounter, the roadblocks you face to be inclusive, and simple ways to address them.
Don’t worry if you don’t know the difference between 508 or WCAG. We’ll demonstrate how even the best sites aren’t meeting these standards and walk you through the fixes. We’ll show you how inaccessibility affects people in real life, help you figure out how to get buy-in from your other stakeholders, and give you the tools to make accessibility happen on your site.
Prerequisites:
- Knowledge of HTML and CSS will help you but anyone involved in development life cycles will benefit.
What to Bring:
- Bring something to take notes with and leave behind everything you think you know.

How much time do you spend on LinkedIn building your professional network?
Honestly.
5 hours a week? 10? 20?
There's no right answer here. The more time you spend on LinkedIn, the more you can harvest its immense potential.
But running a business is about more than networking.
So how can time-strapped, over-committed and under-funded entrepreneurs get the most value from LinkedIn while spending the least amount of time?
In this two and a half hour long workshop, I will share the LinkedIn outsourcing and automation recipe that has expanded Gluu's CEO's network by more than 1,000 targeted connections in under 7 months, and has led to an explosion of interest, serendipity and new leads for the company.
Attendees will learn how to use low value labor for high value networking, and the best way to approach individuals of interest to maximize the likelihood of realizing your desired outcome.
Forget overpriced industry conferences and under productive sales staffs. Use this strategy and watch the targeted leads funnel right into your calendar.
LinkedIn truly is the great equalizer for B2B startups.
Automate and flourish, my friends.
Prerequisites:
- Audience should have a basic knowledge of LinkedIn.
What to Bring:
- Participants should bring a computer or tablet for taking notes.

Sometimes web design isn't all unicorns and rainbows and most likely your site isn't as simple as the one in the demo. Are you stuck with a cludgy out of date (or out of touch) CMS? Does your UI leave much to be desired? Are you tasked with a responsive project sans the luxury of an impending redesign? You're not alone. In this session we'll take a handful of common challenges with implementing responsive design and give you strategies for addressing the issues and keep your project moving forward. With a nod to best practices and separation of concerns, we'll explore practical approaches to overcoming ugly source code, problematic UI, and intrusive JavaScript, to help keep your projects on track. This session will have 4 30 minute sections with a 10 minute break in between. The sections will cover: Aesthetic Design and UI, HTML/CSS, JavaScript, and email.
Prerequisites:
- You should be comfortable with writing HTML and CSS including familiarity with Media Queries.
What to Bring:
- Bring your favorite source code editor and a machine to run it.

The Compelling Image in the Age of Social Media
ATTENTION: You must signup in advance to attend this workshop. You will need to have a valid SXSW badge, and an activated SXsocial account. To reserve your seat, please go here: https://sup.sxsw.com/schedule/IAP24603
A hands-on session to guide creative image makers in making their photographs more effective for the Social Media environment.
There will be a 45 min session focused on the 'new basics’ in social media imagery; composition, lighting, framing, and color as it applies to formal and casual portraits, selfies, brand identity, groups, interiors, landscapes, & action shots. Images from the most famous of photographers to the most inexperienced teen selfie taker will be used to illustrate the lessons.
This will be followed by 30 minutes of creating images. We will work in and around the venue, creating portraits of individuals and groups, using the limitations of camera phone to our expressive advantage, finding available light no matter where we are, and composing a scene for maximum visual impact.
A second 45 min. session will follow to discuss the just completed images of some of the participants; what went right, how we can improve on the image, and how we can apply them to specific projects we need images for.
We will then discuss more advanced photography techniques available within various apps, online photography sites & their pros and cons, and opportunities for even amateur photographers to gain attention and business.
A final shooting & posting session will complete the workshop.
Key takeaways from the Workshop will be:
• Understanding how people see imagery in the Social Media age.
• How to create a great portrait using available light, no matter where you are and no matter what type of camera you have.
• How to take photographs of strangers!
• Where to share and publicize your images for maximum benefit to your social media goals.
Prerequisites:
- The participants need to be familiar with camera phones or better (DSLR, Point and Shoot). They need to know how to store and upload images.
What to Bring:
- The participant will need at least a camera phone. We will focus on camera phones as well as DSLRs and point and shoots.
- Having a laptop or tablet to display your images to others in your group will be helpful, but not necessary.

This two and a half hour art focused Unity workshop will span several topics that are important to artists working in Unity. We will start with a brief introduction by Beau Folsom, the Lead of the Unity Demo team in Seattle. This will be followed by some questions for the audience to better gauge the general skill level of the group, and an overview of the topics we will cover. We will be diving into many aspects of the art pipeline, demonstrated with real-world examples. Aspects such as importing various assets, setting up basic animation, lighting, camera effects, textures, and optimization. We will finish out with the Asset Store, and how it can be used in rapid prototyping and still leave a good amount of time for Q&A at the end. These topics will be interspersed with insights and tips & tricks that have been collected over nearly three years of demo work within Unity. The audience will walk away with:
- More efficient workflow practices in Unity
- Ways to achieve fun results without scripting knowledge
- Exposure to Unity features that are often underutilized, and in some cases undocumented, to explore and play with on their own.
Prerequisites:

How to Spot a Liar...with Data
Can you use data to spot a liar? The answer may not be found in what a person says, but rather in how he/she says it. Prepared liars are always conscious about their spoken content and details, but often overlook the words around the edges and their non-verbal communication.
Looking at the latest innovative work and emerging science out of Quantified Impressions labs, I will demonstrate how you can use data and analytics to spot a liar and share science-based language and delivery components to evaluate the degree of trustworthiness of a speaker.
I will run 3 scenarios where I will provide analytics around individuals and show how their presentation patterns can help determine their degree of trustworthiness.
As one of 3 examples, I will show how Lance Armstrong moved his truth language components by 74% from his interview in 2005 with Larry King to his admittance of guilt interview with Oprah in 2013.

Entering the Production Era of Cloud Computing
Cloud Economics Inside the Firewall -for many CIOs, data privacy, data residency, and compliance requirements will ensure that certain enterprise applications remain on premise for some time. This doesn't mean the infrastructure hosting these applications will stay the same. In fact, due to the transparent nature of public cloud computing pricing, the cat is already out of the bag. Public cloud pricing transparency has set an aggressive standard that all IT departments will be benchmarked against, whether they like it or not. Today's IT departments that depend on costly and complex legacy IT infrastructure will most certainly struggle to keep up. CIOs everywhere will want to figure out how to get cloud-like economics inside their firewalls. Adam will discuss how enterprises are delivering their own internal cloud infrastructure

IoT: Is the Coming Plague of Devices Too Smart?
In the next era of computing, the coming “plague” will bring an elaborate network of devices, sensors and radios that will talk with each other, and collect, store and analyze overwhelming amounts of data. It will deliver computing that is truly personalized and secure; a network that will enable a harmonious interaction between humans, society, and devices. Intel's Peter Biddle will discuss the implications of the connected world that have yet to be explored. For example, with everything from diapers to dishwashers being “connected,” what does this mean for society as a whole? Do we run the risk of losing control and allowing technology to take over lives? Biddle will address how the social fabric of humans and societies will evolve as the Internet of Things becomes a reality. He will explore the benefits and challenges of this new connectivity, including the projected social opportunities, innovations and challenges that consumers can expect, as well as security implications.

A Funny Taboo: The Art of LOL for Business Women
Should women in business be funny? It’s proven (2011 psychology study) that men are funnier than women. Women shy away from humor in the work place, and (yet another study) men are not attracted to funny women. Till now, the message has been: women are humor appreciators NOT humor creators. Not true. Today, women are using humor to build business brands and comedy empires. But will it work for you? If you are a woman, run your own business and have a sense of humor (pretty essential) should YOU unleash it to see if people ROFL in the aisles? Will it win you customers or could it undermine your credibility?
This presentation looks at the fear of using humor in business and how to overcome it. You’ll see how women are using degrees of humor (from mild to taboo) to market what they do. Some use stand-up techniques to attract customers while others use humor to combat PR crises. You’ll leave with fresh ideas for using humor in your business... and have a laugh at the same time.

Designing Smart Objects for Emotional People
Wearable technology, smart meters, and networked devices have generated an environment of abundant digital chatter. It is now socially acceptable to compete with your FuelBand, send a text to your thermostat, and argue with Siri. We build emotional attachments to these digital objects and even make space for them in our social life. The Internet of Things promises to bring more objects to life, but there must be a limit to how many talking things we can tolerate. Will it be awkward when I have to unfollow my bicycle because its status updates bore me? This presentation will examine the impact of technology on human emotion and explore how conversations with ourselves, our devices, and one another are evolving.

AI: Natural Interactions Between Man & Machine
In an increasingly connected world, our devices will become an extension of ourselves, embracing elements of ambient intelligence, voice and natural language understanding to not only deliver desired information, but understand our needs/wants in predictive, contextual ways as they learn about us and our surroundings. Enabled by cloud-based intelligent systems and personal assistant technologies, we’re reaching a new level of man/machine interaction through the intelligence behind the way our requests are processed and subsequently entering an era of big data that’ll enable intelligent, natural interactions that anticipate and proactively address our needs. In order to truly capture human interaction, the next generation of technologies need to detect subtle cues from our voice, expressions, gestures and intent. Complex interactions such as these will become just as natural as interacting with another person. How do we make man/machine come together so our interactions are organic?

The Case for the Coding CEO
Coding is a skill that is traditionally held by a select group of individuals within a company. We know them as developers, computer science students, programmers, hackers… and in a few rare cases (perhaps too few), CEOs. At New Relic, a San Francisco-based startup that gives developers the software analytics they need to understand web/mobile app performance, CEO and Founder Lew Cirne still actively codes, often for weeks at a time, to develop the next innovation for his products. It’s his passion. It’s his mission to instill craftsmanship even at the code level so the product will be simple and easy to use while offering advanced technical functionality at a price anyone can afford. There is now opportunities in the new economy for leaders to possess this hybrid business/technological skill set. During this solo presentation, Lew will discuss the benefits of being a CEO who embrace his inner nerd and what leaders in technology will achieve by making coding a priority.

Brands Can Champion the Power of Sport
Brands want to be loved. Consumers seek happiness. Brands make consumers happy by creating strong emotional connections to the things consumers are most passionate about.
Sport is an inspirational power for good. Sport enhances the lives of individuals, communities, countries and the entire world. It promotes healthy living and teaches life lessons; it has stopped wars and ended injustices.
From a brand perspective, the passion that consumers have for sport represents one of the most underutilized raw materials in marketing… especially for brand marketers looking to make their brand more loved.
Simon Wardle, Octagon’s Chief Strategy Officer, will reveal how Octagon research has quantified what drives fan passion and how fans indulge their passion for sports. The resulting insights will help brands use content, positioning, messaging, timing and channel selection to harness the power of sport… and make consumers fall in love with their brand.
This session is part of the brand new SXsports programming at SXSW 2014.

Mobile Addicts Anonymous Meet Up
Do you love your phone? Do you love your phone so much that you cannot imagine life without it? That the thought of being “disconnected” creates an incredible sense of anxiety? This is THE meet up of SXSW where mobile addicts come together, swap mobile addiction stories, share the latest and greatest on mobile innovation and get their mobile fix!
The goal of this meet-up, is to bring together mobile influencers, power-users and yes, smartphone addicts, to have a peer-to-peer discussion on mobile user needs, frustrations and speak about where mobile innovation is heading.
This is an opportunity for mobile enthusiasts alike to speak up about what they love and hate about their smartphones. Having analysts, researchers and developers speak about mobile innovation is great. But who better than mobile addicts themselves, to truly understand the pain points and needs affecting us all.
Join us for a very fun and interactive meet-up and discussion on mobile innovation.

The Future of Making
The idea of making isn’t just reserved for handmade bikes, artisan pickles, and Arduino helicopters. The future of making is a product of our human needs and the possibilities we create through technology. This is about a larger shift towards making and the unexpected movements that might occur. It's about how everyone from you to your grandma might design, make and consume products or experiences in the next 10 to 15 years. In this session Joi Ito, Director of the MIT Media Lab, and Tim Brown, CEO of IDEO, will host a conversation that considers how we might fashion new tools for the future and then how those tools might influence our lives.
