Office of the Future: Optimizing for Happiness

We spend around a third of our lives at work – whether that’s in an office, in a coffee shop, or in your living room, the right work environment can dramatically impact productivity and happiness. Companies like Google, Facebook, and Apple are building huge campuses to attract the best talent. So what design and architecture considerations are actually most important?
GitHub’s Scott Chacon has spent much of the past year thinking about these challenges, as he oversees the design and building of GitHub’s new 55,000 square foot headquarters in San Francisco. Scott will discuss how he solicited feedback from the rapidly growing number of his colleagues (via GitHub, of course) to design an office that encourages productivity without becoming all-consuming (Scott said ‘no’ to beds in the office). He can also talk about optimizing the office space for remote employees who are only onsite a few times a year, and what considerations are most important in deciding where to open new offices.
