Black Women in Tech: Uncovering Barriers to Entry

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Though the numbers are on the rise, the discrepancy in the amount of Black women in the tech startup space as compared to their general market counterparts is alarming. According to 2012 figures, African American women held just 3% of all tech jobs. What is more disconcerting, women in tech make up 5% of the founders and chief executives of tech startups. The panel will uncover the overwhelming barriers to entry for Black women in tech, including: access to funding, technological hurdles, and a need for impactful mentorship, through the experiences and expertise of these panelists.
Panelists will include: Madame You: a startup platform for African-American women to share their hair experiences; Sonia Alleyne, Editorial Director at Black Enterprise Magazine and Co-editorial Director, Women of Power Conference; Stacey Ferguson, co-Founder and Chief Curator of the Blogalicious community and conferences celebrating diversity in social media; and an expert in entrepreneurial funding.
