Wearable technology, smart meters, and networked devices have generated an environment of abundant digital chatter. It is now socially acceptable to compete with your FuelBand, send a text to your thermostat, and argue with Siri. We build emotional attachments to these digital objects and even make space for them in our social life. The Internet of Things promises to bring more objects to life, but there must be a limit to how many talking things we can tolerate. Will it be awkward when I have to unfollow my bicycle because its status updates bore me? This presentation will examine the impact of technology on human emotion and explore how conversations with ourselves, our devices, and one another are evolving.
