When our daughter was born she lost too much of her birth weight too quickly. So we started keeping a log of everything she consumed and, inevitably, expelled. It started with a simple spreadsheet to track the exact amount of milk she was drinking, time of day, number of minutes it took her to complete a feeding and how long between burps. Next, we tracked diapers. Then sleep. Within three weeks, she was progressing normally.
But why would we stop now? We’d already noticed a few patterns, and we had allowed the data to dictate our parenting. While our daughter couldn’t communicate beyond crying, we discovered that we could have a deeply intimate conversation with her through data. We realized that we could quantify and study her in an attempt to optimize all of her development.
I’d argue that our extreme data analysis makes us better parents. In this session, I’ll tell the story of why we got started, show our methodology and results, and explain how to replicate our model.
