Open Source Licenses for Makers & Humans

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

The ideology of open source is simple: Share what you make, collaborate with others to improve it, and repeat. This started out in software, but has exploded into all areas of creativity. Hardware, art, music, and even culture are embracing the power of open source methods. The key to how all of this works lies in the licensing, and that is far from simple. Copyright, trademarks, and patents are leveraged in creative ways in the open source legal universe. The trick is to strike the right balance of protecting your legal rights and embracing openness. Thankfully, there are a lot of existing licenses for you to use! In this session, I will discuss how open source licenses work, help makers understand how to pick the correct licenses for their needs, and help humans understand what licenses mean (and how to comply with them).
