Mobile often gets treated like a design-and-dev challenge, but it's much more than that. As we embrace responsive design, launch endless apps, and begin to consider all kinds of devices—from newfangled smartphones and tablets to weirder waters like Google Glass or connected cars—we have a huge problem on our hands: our content.
See, we've spent years designing our content for desktop display. We've built our CMSes, our workflows, and our skillsets around it. And now that world's come crashing down. We can't keep making pages and documents like we always did. And we can't build one-off content for every new device, either—we're already scrambling to keep up.
We need a new way to think about and plan for content—content that can go everywhere it needs to, while serving our users and our brand at the same time.
This eight-hour workshop will help you start untangling your content's past and planning for its future—a future designed around flexibility, adaptation, and reuse. We'll cover:
9:30-10:30am—The Big Picture: Establishing vision, strategy, and messaging
10:30-11:15am—User Journeys: What do our users need from us? When? What content would that -require?
11:15-11:30am—Break
11:30am-12:30pm—Content Analysis: How can we align our existing content with our strategy? With our users' journeys? What are we missing? What can we get rid of? What's preventing that content from getting where it needs to go?
12:30-1:30pm—Lunchtime
1:30-3:00pm—Content Structure: Content modeling, metadata, and all the tools to make content ready for multiple destinations
3:00-4:00pm—Rewriting for Mobile and Reuse: Guidelines and techniques for turning old desktop-centric content into something trim, well-structured, and ready for travel
4:00-4:15pm—Break
4:15-5:30pm—Content Prototyping: With our content modeled and well-defined, what interface possibilities do we have? What can we build now?
5:30-6pm—Closing the Day: How to get started with this work, especially in a big, messy organization full of lots of existing content?
Prerequisites:
- This workshop is designed for people with interest and experience in web content—including content strategists, content managers, information architects, user experience practitioners, and writers.
**Note that this workshop is not about promoting/marketing your content on social channels.**
What to Bring:
- Please bring a tablet or laptop. You will not need it for the full day, but you will want to look at the example websites we are using in the activities.
